2012 Holden SS Ute
Holden’s VE SS Ute has claimed the 2011 Drive Car of the Year’s Best Ute Award for the third consecutive year.
The reigning champion was complimented for its car-like handling and for becoming the first utility in Australia to receive a maximum five star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
The ute was judged by a panel of experts from Drive.com.au, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age on a broad criteria including performance, price, quality, comfort, practicality and safety.
Drive Car of the Year judge David Morley said the SS Ute had stood out because it managed to retain many of the things that make the SS sedan a such compelling product.
Holden Director of Marketing Philip Brook said winning back-to-back Best Úte awards was a great achievement that acknowledged the local talent that went into the program.
To win this award for the third consecutive year recognises Holdens ongoing commitment to delivering value, style and performance, Mr Brook §äid.
The VE SS Úte is well equipped wîth standard features including 18-inch alloy wheels, sports body kit wîth fog lamps, quad exhausts, six-disc MP3 compatible CD system, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity, side impact airbags, curtain airbags and Electronic Stability Control.
It is powered by Holdens 6.0 litre Gen IV V8 engine, delivering 270kW of peak power and 530Nm of peak torque and is matched to a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission wîth Active Select.
Holdens VE Úte range has become the first utility in Australia to receive a maximum five star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) or the Euro New Car Assessment Program (EuroNCAP).
This follows the announcement last month that Holden achieved another Australian safety first by launching the first Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) to offer six airbags as standard across the range.
The latest result means Holdens entire locally manufactured vehicle range now carries a five star safety rating from ANCAP.
The ANCAP result reflects the long list of safety features found standard across the VE Úte range including side impact airbags, curtain airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) which incorporates Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Brake Assist (EBA) and Traction Control System (TCS).
Holden Vehicle Structure & Safety Integration Manager, Steve Curtis said Holden had a long and proud history of delivering safety firsts.

BMW 1 series coming next year
BMW will launch the 1-series in India by late 2013. It will be locally produced at the BMW plant in Chennai.
BMW has revealed that it will be bringing its 1-series hatchback (codename: F20) to India late next year. The current-generation model has been on sale in international markets since September last year.
The 1-series is the smallest and most affordable car in the BMW range, which is why the company sees great potential for the five-door hatchback in the Indian market.
Encouraged by the booming sales of the X1, and also possibly in response to Mercedes’ plans to launch the A-class hatchback – a direct rival for the 1-series – in India, BMW hopes the 1 will carve out a new niche for itself here as a powerful, premium, rear-wheel-drive hatchback. The car will be locally produced at the BMW plant in Chennai, so expect prices to be in the range of around Rs 18-20 lakh.
The design is striking, if not classically attractive – the shark-nose treatment with the forward-leaning kidney grille, the clamshell bonnet and the large, recessed headlights, give it a premium look, and you can’t mistake it for anything but a BMW. The surface treatment along the sides isn’t as conflicting as the previous 1-series and, as a result, is easier on the eye. The tail-lamps have also been pushed to the extremities of the rear to allow for a larger tailgate aperture.
Based on the same platform architecture as the 3-series, it shares some major components with the saloon, including its front MacPherson struts and multi-link rear suspension.
It’s not as small as it looks in the photographs, though. At 4.2 metres long and with a wheelbase that has been stretched by 30mm over the last 1-series, this car’s dimensions are more mid-size saloon than small hatch. This points to a roomy, comfortable cabin. Expect cabin quality to be closer to the X3 and 3-series as well. Helping distance the 1-series from ‘junta’ hatchbacks is BMW’s rear-wheel-drive layout.
Internationally, BMW sells the 1-series with 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines, and even a turbocharged 3.0-litre, six-cylinder petrol in the 135i, but Indian cars might share engines with the X1 in the interest of costs. This means a 2.0-litre, 181bhp diesel and a 150bhp, 2.0-litre petrol, with the distant possibility of a hot, 168bhp, direct-injection petrol option.
The 1-series could be an inviting proposition for someone who already owns a BMW and wants a small, yet premium hatchback to punt around town. If BMW prices it right, the 1-series has the potential to dispel the misconception that premium cars have to be premium-sized and could propel the German carmaker’s sales to another level.

Datsun Brand to Sell Cars in South Africa as Well Starting from 2014 First Teaser Rendering
At a press conference at Nissans Yokohama plant on Monday, the Japanese carmaker announced that the re-born Datsun Brand is set to return to South Africa, with the first passenger car to be launched onto the market at the end of 2014.
The announcement follows a global decision in 2010 to re-introduce the Datsun brand as part of the Japanese companys "Nissan Power 88" mid-term plan, which calls for an 8 percent global market share and 8 percent operating profit by fiscal year 2016.
Currently, Datsun sales are planned for four major markets, including South Africa, India, Indonesia and Russia, during the course of 2014.
"Following Infinitis launch last year, we are delighted that South Africa is also a destination of choice for Datsun vehicles," commented Mike Whitfield, managing director of Nissan South Africa (NSA).
"Datsun enjoyed a proud heritage in the country after the Bluebird made its debut at the Pretoria Show in 1958, the 120Y and SSS models were household names, before going on to become the number one brand between 1976 and 1978."
In addition to the announcement, we also found a teaser rendering showing the front end of Datsuns first production model that will be a compact passenger car. Were not sure if this image has gone public before, but this is the first time weve seen it.
In December, it was revealed that the Datsuns new low-cost family cars will share their underpinnings with Russias Lada, which in mid-2014, will pass into the ownership of the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

Shock pricing for Chevrolet Sail saloon
Chevrolet has launched the Sail saloon at a very competitive starting price of Rs 4.99 lakh for the base petrol variant.
General Motors India has launched the Chevrolet Sail saloon with a very aggressive starting price of Rs 4.99 lakh for the base petrol model. The tepid response to the Chevrolet U-VA late last year has led Chevrolet to revisit their strategy when it comes to pricing its products. The competitive starting price of the Sail saloon has left even the dealers surprised, as this is just about Rs 60,000 more than that of the hatch variant.
While petrol variants are priced from Rs 4.99 - 6.41 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the diesel variants are on offer from Rs 6.29 - 7.51 lakh. This puts the Sail saloon right in the epicenter of the ultra-competitive territory of entry-level sedans. The Sail saloon is powered by a 79bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced diesel motor. The diesel motor comes mated to the F17 gearbox with ratios tuned specifically for India.
The company’s claimed fuel efficiency figures are 18.2kpl for the petrol and 22.1kpl for the diesel motor. The base trim comes with power steering, front power windows, electric folding wing mirrors, tilt steering, a digital tachometer, engine immobilizer and a 12V power outlet. ABS and EBD come standard on all trims.
While styling may not be radical, the Sail saloon is quite pleasing to look at. The split grille with the bowtie emblem links the new saloon to the rest of the Chevy range. The car looks quite smart from the rear, thanks to its near-vertical tail section. Available in seven colour options, the Sail saloon will come with a 3 year/1, 00,000km warranty and 5 year/50,000km warranty on the powertrain. Chevrolet has no plans to launch an automatic variant anytime soon.

BMW M Reportedly Plans to Stick to Rear Wheel Drive Ahem…X5 M Cough Cough…X6 M
The news coming from the worlds oldest car magazine (yes, thats the same one that had the Auto Cars Concept on the Alfa Romeo 4C), is that BMW Ms division is committed to rear wheel drive.
BMW M boss Friedrich Nitschke spoke to the publication about the matter during last months Detroit Auto Show: "Our philosophy in regards to steering feel and precision is that rear-wheel drive is the best solution," he said. "xDrive brings an 80-90kg weight penalty and the M differential is the industry’s best rear-drive set-up."
Well, we guess neither Nitschke nor Autocar have ever heard about the…BMW X5 M and X6 M, or the M135i xDrive, M550d xDrive and the X6 50d xDrive (granted; the Bavarian company describes the last three as "Powered by M" and "M Performance" models, but they still carry the "M" nameplate anyway).
During the interview, Nitschke added that the M brand will continue to offer manual gearboxes as long as theres demand, and that there are no "imminent plans" to offer an M3 version of the new 3-Series Gran Turismo.
