Alfa Romeo 4C Mid Engine Sports Coupe This is it The Production Model

It’s been a painful two years of waiting since the 2011 Geneva study but finally, Alfa Romeo has revealed the first images of the 4C sports coupe that will make its world debut in the upcoming Geneva Auto Show on March 5.
The transition from concept to production hasn’t robbed the 4C of its delicious styling, which is all but identical sans some details like the headlamps, tail lights and door mirrors, nor its specifications or dimensions that measure “less than 4 meters” long, 1.18 m high and 2.0 m wide and a wheelbase of “less than 2.4 meters”.

In an era when most auto manufacturers boast about carbon fiber parts in their new sports cars, Alfa Romeo has equipped the 4C with an all-carbon fiber monocoque, with just the front and rear frames being made of aluminum.

Alfa Romeo is still keeping its cards very close to its chest as far as weight or performance numbers are concerned, divulging only that the 4C has a weight-to-power ratio of less than 4 kg/HP.

The 4C uses an evolution of the 1,750cc (1.75-liters) turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde. It features a new aluminum block and specifically-designed intake and exhaust manifolds, as well as direct injection and dual continuous valve timing.

Like in the concept, the production 4C has a mid-engined configuration, with power transferred to the rear wheels via the TCT twin dry clutch transmission. It features an auto as well as a sequential mode, with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

Having debuted on the MiTo, the DNA selector that changes the throttle, steering and gearbox settings is not exactly a novelty. Its fourth mode that is added to the Dynamic, Natural and All Weather that are standard on other models, though, is: developed specifically for the 4C and aptly named Race it is, according to the company, designed to enhance the handling characteristics on track driving.

The 4C, which will go on sale later this year and mark Alfa Romeo’s return to the U.S. market, will be manufactured (in very limited numbers, if our insider report is correct) at Maserati’s plant.

New Cadillac ELR Converj EV Coupe

Ever since GM displayed the Cadillac Converj at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show, rumors have swirled that a production model was under consideration. But we now have official confirmation that the pure electric Converj is indeed moving forward as a production car that will be named the Cadillac ELR.

“The concept generated instant enthusiasm,” said Don Butler, vice president-Cadillac Marketing. “Like other milestone Cadillac models of the past, the ELR will offer something not otherwise present – the combination of electric propulsion with striking design and the fun of luxury coupe driving.”

The Cadillac ELR will be equipped with a similar electric propulsion system to the Chevy Volt, featuring a T-shaped lithium ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator.

Like the Volt, the ELR will use electricity as its primary source of energy for motivation, with the gasoline engine generator kicking in once the batteries are depleted.

General Motors said that the development of the ELR is well underway with more details on the powertrain to be released at a later date.

“There’s no mistaking it for anything but a Cadillac, an aggressive, forward-leaning profile and proportion showcases a uniquely shaped, modern vision of a personal luxury 2+2,” said Ed Welburn, GM vice president, Global Design.

The announcement on the production of the ELR Coupe comes shortly after Cadillac confirmed the new XTS large luxury saloon and the BMW 3-Series challenging ATS compact sports sedan.

GM added that it will show a new concept model on Thursday, August 18, at a special event prior to the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

TireKicker Time Machine 1994 Acura Legend Coupe

Tyson Hugies 1994 Acura Legend Coupe front view
Tyson Hugies 1994 Acura Legend Coupe. Not your typical 18-year old car.

Confession: Ive been neglecting the TireKicker Time Machine feature. Partly because its 17 million degrees in Phoenix this summer but also because Im looking for the exceptional.

Turns out I found it in the summer of 2009...and just needed reminding.

The picture above is of a 1994 Acura Legend 6-Speed Coupe belonging to a young man named Tyson Hugie. And its a recent photo.

Thats us, a little over two years ago, meeting for the first time when I was doing a story for television on people who keep their cars for 100,000  200,000 miles or more. Tyson more than qualified...his Legend had 378,000 miles..and was not only running...but virtually flawless. That was our only meeting. Weve stayed in sporadic touch by e-mail since.

Tysons a huge believer in maintenance. Anything that breaks gets fixed fast, and theres so much attention to upkeep that nothing much breaks.

And if you think he keeps it nice by not driving it much...remember that mileage? 378,000 two summers ago? Heres the odometer from this past weekend:

Tysons 1994 Acura Legend Coupe odometer reading as of this weekend.

Thats right...now closing in on half a million miles. Tyson has driven 113,774 miles in 26 months. Thats 4,375 miles a month. Testing two cars a week, I do maybe 2,000...2,400 tops. Hows he do it?

He drives places. Interesting, faraway places:

There are a lot of interesting adventures and insights wrapped up in getting a car to the 500,000 mile mark...and Tyson tells them best in his own blog devoted to getting there: DriveToFive (Legendary Quest for 500,000 Miles). Hell hit that milestone soon at this rate...so bookmark it now and start enjoying the ride.
